Noob's Guide to the Cataclysm

  • Before the launch date be sure to camp in Stormwind/Ironforge if you're Alliance, Orgrimmar if you're Horde. All portals will be removed from Dalaran and Shattrath City when Cataclysm goes live, don't let yourself get stuck there.
  • Don't forget to set your hearth to your new classic city of choice before you ship out!
  • Major cities now have a Hero/Command Board located near the bank or Auction House. These boards have the starter quests for new zones.
  • To fly in the classic zones you need to purchase a Flight Master's License from the flight trainers, which should cost about 250 gold. Flight trainers are located near the city flight masters, make sure you pick this up before you leave.
  • Profession trainers in all major cities will now teach you the Illustrious rank for your tradeskills. You should visit them before leaving town if you plan to level gathering skills.
  • A new Jewelcrafting trainer has been added to the Trade District in Stormwind. She is located on the northeast corner by the canals. Horde also have a new Jewelcrafting trainer in Orgrimmar. She can be found in the Valley of Honor at the hut to the east of the Auction House. Both trainers have a daily quest NPC standing near them.
  • The Archaeology trainer is located in the Stormwind Library for Alliance and Belloc Brightblade in Grommash Hold for Horde. There is another trainer in Dalaran at the Legerdemain Lounge.
  • The new Cooking daily quest NPC is near the Stockades entrance in Stormwind, the token vendor is with him. The Horde Cooking daily quest NPC is outside Borstan's Firepit in The Drag, the token vendor is there as well.
  • The guild vendor (who sells guild reputation items) is located at the Visitor's Center in Stormwind and on the west exterior side of Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar.
  • The Justice and Valorous Quartermasters are at Stormwind, inside the Command Center of Old Town. Horde players can find their new Quartermasters on the upper level of Grommash Hold
  • Horde should check out the new Goblin area of Orgrimmar - the Goblin Slums!

Cataclysm Zone Information

  • Vashj'ir is the new underwater zone. Players who enjoy a challenge and aren't intimidated by extra mob aggro should start here. Flying mounts are not available in this zone, but your first quest chain will get you a brand new seahorse mount! Expect this zone to be less crowded due to lack of flying and aggro issues. This is also a better zone to quest in if you want to keep Mount Hyjal unphased for mining/herbing purposes. Unlike previous expansions, the quests in this zone are not available until your character is level 80. This zone is officially listed as appropriate for characters between 80 and 82. Set your hearthstone to Ironforge/Stormwind/Undercity if you want to quest in Vashj'ir.
  • Vashj'ir is located due west from Ironforge, across the ocean. You can fly across the small gap without dying from fatigue if you fly directly between the closest points of the two continents. However I strongly encourage you to follow the starter quest out there, as you get to watch a fun little cutscene as you travel!
  • Starting the quests in Vashj'ir requires you to catch a boat from the northernmost dock in Stormwind. There is a cutscene you have to wait for, just be patient. Yes, the same dock that the Northrend boat uses. Get over it.
  • Mount Hyjal is the new starter zone in Kalimdor, located just south of Winterspring and west of Felwood. There's a portal to Moonglade at the Stormwind Keep, in the small park by the library. Set your hearthstone to Darnassus/Orgrimmar if you want to start in this zone. This zone will be easier to travel in because flying mounts are functional here. Expect this zone to be more crowded than Vashj'ir, even with phasing. Unlike previous expansions, the quests in this zone are not available until your character is level 80. This zone is officially listed as appropriate for characters between 80 and 82.
  • Deepholm in only accessible via portal. You cannot use this portal until you are level 82. Materials that can be gathered here are Heartblossom, Cinderbloom, Elementium and a little Obsidium.
  • Uldum is located on Kalimdor, south of Tanaris. Materials that can be gathered here are Whiptail, Cinderbloom, Elementium and Pyrite. This zone is officially listed as appropriate for characters between 83 and 84.
  • Twilight Highlands is located in the Eastern Kingdoms, west of the Wetlands and Loch Modan. Materials that can be gathered here are Twilight Jasmine, Cinderbloom, Elementium and Pyrite. This zone is officially listed as appropriate for characters between 84 and 85.
